11:30 – Benneteau v Soderling

Rankings are 38 and 9. Head to heads are 3-2 in Soderling’s favour. Soderling has won their last 3 matches.

Both men are in decent form with Benneteau playing above his ranking.

Soderling is most comfortable on this surface and his huge serve and ground strokes will prove slightly too much for the Frenchman. Soderling made a poor start to the season, going out in the first round of the Oz Open ( think I jinxed him) but has improved since.

Benneteau is playing very well and won’t be rolling over.

Back Soderling on serve.

I expect 2 tight sets.

Update: Not close at all! Soderling won 6-0, 6-1.

18:30 – Baghdatis v Davydenko

Rankings are 36 and 7. Head to heads are 2-1 to Baghdatis although they haven’t played since late 2007.

Baghdatis played very well against Blake. His first serve percentage was again poor but he wins a high proportion of points when it does go in.

Davydenko is a very different proposition to Blake. He is one of the best returners of serve and I am sure he will be attacking the second serves.

Davy wins 82% of his service games and hits 68% of first serves in.

Either back Davydenko on his own serve or back him from the start. Green up after the first set.

Make sure you have your strategy in place for if Davydenko loses serve.

I expect a straight sets win for Davydenko.

Update: Davydenko won 6-3, 6-2.

18:30 – Baghdatis v Blake

Rankings are 36 and 52. Surprisingly they haven’t met before.

Difficult to pick a winner until you look at the stats. Blake’s first serve percentage is 60% whereas Baghdatis is struggling on 49%.

Blake wins 84% of his service games and Baghdatis 81% which is excellent considering how many 2nd serves he is having to use.

Blake saves 62% of break points against him and Baghdatis just 53%.

Baghdatis has been playing very well and winning matches despite his poor serving. That suggests to me that he is having to work a lot harder to win games. Blake is more likely to take advantage of second serves and so Baghdatis’ serve could be his downfall today.

Watch to see how the opening games go but I will be looking to back Blake on his serve.

If both men play to their best then this will be a close match.

Update: Well i read this one completely wrong. There wasn’t too much between them in the first set and i backed Blake on a service game. It worked ok but in the next one he was broken. As it was near the end of the set i switched sides at 0-40. Baggy held on to serve out the set. In the second I felt Blake was the least likely to break so i gave Baggy a couple of games to get the break himself. He didnt disappoint and I greened up.

I didn’t expect Blake to collapse quite as badly as he did.

You don’t need to pick the winner before the match starts to be able to profit from trading.

Baghdatis won 6-4, 6-2.
